How to measure a horse for a blanket?

The fit of your horse blanket is critical to ensuring your horse’s comfort and preventing friction and blanket sliding. Because horses of the same wither height vary in a range of forms and sizes, it is beneficial to collect specific measurements of your horse.

  • Measure from (A) at the center of the chest, across the point of the shoulder, and to (B) at the center of the tail using a soft measuring tape.
  • When you have the measurement, remove 4 inches (10 cm) and choose your horse’s size from the table below. Bear in mind that every horse is different and that this table is a guide only. We have many different styles to suit all shapes and sizes.

Horse Blanket Size by Horse Height

The most often question our customer service representatives are asked is what size blanket to purchase for a certain height horse. Because horses’ forms vary so significantly, measuring is crucial. The length of the back, breadth of the shoulders, and size of the hindquarters may all have a significant impact on the blanket size required by a horse. The most frequent blanket sizes we offer for the following horse heights are listed below. To emphasize, this is a very broad recommendation, therefore please measure (twice) to acquire the optimal blanket size for your horse.

11.0h:  51″ – 57″
12.0h:  57″ – 60″
13.0h:  60″ – 63″
14.0h:  66″ – 69″
15.0h:  69″ – 75″
16.0h:  75″ – 81″
17.0h:  81″ – 84″
18.0h:  84″ – 87″

Warmth of a Horse Blanket

Horseware blankets come in a variety of weights. To make it easier, we’ve created this little temperature scale.  A turnout blanket acts as a waterproof insulator layer, helping to maintain condition in cold weather. However be aware that conditions may vary in a short time span.  Always ensure your horse is comfortable at all times.
